I recently added several Citrix NetScaler VIPs for monitoring purposes to our Paessler PRTG solution (vsvr state). This can be a hassle if you would like to get a suitable message as soon as the status of this channel changes. I started with setting manual lower warning and error values but then I got to know how to define custom lookups within PRTG because of a colleague using those for a different purpose.

The general procedure is being described by Paessler very well within their documentation here.

Just use the shown XML code for you own implementation and probably change the sample text I put in:

<?xml version=“1.0″ encoding=“UTF-8″?>
<ValueLookup id=“customlookups.citrix.netscaler.vsvr.status“ desiredValue=“7″ xmlns:xsi=“http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance“ xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=“PaeValueLookup.xsd“>
<Lookups>
<SingleInt state=“Warning“ value=“4″>
VIP has been disabled manually
</SingleInt>
<SingleInt state=“OK“ value=“7″>
VIP is 100% up
</SingleInt>
<SingleInt state=“Error“ value=“0″>
VIP is down
</SingleInt>
</Lookups>
</ValueLookup>

It might be possible that I did not get all possible states. If someone knows a third state or even more of them you are very welcome to post your comment and give me a hint. I unfortunately did not find a documentation about all possible values we can expect for this special or any other MIB.
